Barrie Porteous
Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barrie Porteous on January 29, 2026. Born on June 22, 1936, Barrie grew up in Rouyn‑Noranda, Northern Quebec, a place that helped shape the strong and grounded, man he would become.
Barrie lived a life defined by love, love for his family, and the simple joys that made each day meaningful. He was a devoted husband, a remarkable father, a proud grandfather and great‑grandfather, and a man whose presence made others feel comfortable, welcomed, and valued.
Barrie shared a beautiful life with his loving wife, Joy Porteous, as they approached their 37th year of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering partnerships.
As a father, Barrie was deeply involved, endlessly supportive, and fiercely loving. He was strong and manly, yet modern and gentle in his approach to parenting. He believed in raising his daughters to be confident and capable, providing words of wisdom that have guided them throughout their lives.
Barrie carried an unwavering sense of optimism. He rarely saw the negative, choosing instead to meet life and people with kindness, patience, and understanding. He was always willing to help, always ready to listen, and never too busy for a conversation. As a neighbor, he was truly cherished. A friendly wave, a warm smile, and a genuine chat were never far away, earning him the affectionate nickname “Mr. Have a Chat” from those who knew him best.
He found happiness in everyday moments. Barrie loved baking, especially loaves and scones, tending to his garden, and enjoying his favourite sweets, with jube jubes holding a special place in his heart. He appreciated good seafood, had a lifelong love of hockey and proudly cheered for the Montreal Canadiens, and carried a playful need for speed. He enjoyed coaching girls’ softball and treasured his travels to Palm Springs, California, where he embraced sunshine, relaxation, and adventure.
He leaves behind his daughters, Liz (Greg Ugolini) and Jackie (Sandro Torresan), and his step‑sons, Gary Savoie (Lisa) and Derrick Savoie (Jennifer). Barrie was a proud and loving grandfather to Kiara, Graham (Breena), Claire (Jake), Alex, and Victoria (Cherechi), and a joyful great‑grandfather to Evander, Eddison, Colton, Carson, and Violet.
Barrie was predeceased by his parents, John Porteous and Stella Ebbers, and by his brother Dennis. He was the second eldest of ten siblings and remained deeply connected to the family he grew up in, carrying those bonds with him throughout his life.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff and nurses at Hospice Niagara – Walker Family (Welland), as well as the Paramed nurses and PSW support staff, for their exceptional care, kindness, and support during this difficult time.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family Celebration of Life will be held later, where family will gather to honour a man, whose love was steady, whose heart was generous, and whose presence made the world feel a little warmer.
Barrie Porteous will be remembered not only for what he did, but for who he was, a gentle strength, a loving protector, a devoted family man, and a soul whose kindness left a lasting mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
