In Loving Memory

With sadness and gratitude, we announce the peaceful passing of Charles Stuart Thomas Morton in Ottawa. Born 1929 in Manchester, England, and son of Charles and Nellie Doris Morton. Charles was the beloved husband of Ivy (nee Mattison) for 73 years, father of Wendy (David), Alison (Lee) and John (Carol), and adored grandfather of Charlotte (Wade), Andrew (Briana), Stuart, Henry and Isabelle.

Severely injured survivor of the Manchester Blitz of 1940 in which his father, grandmother and two other family members were killed, Charles' account of which rests in the Imperial War Museum.

Charles joined the Merchant Navy at age 16 as the war waned, serving for 9 years until emigrating to Canada in 1954. Upon arrival, he joined the Canadian Army Militia, serving with the Royal Canadian Artillery.

In Montreal, Charles joined RCA Limited and later its successor company Spar Aerospace, developer of the Canadarm, where he worked until retirement in 1991.

A dedicated Mason since 1962, past Grand Registrar of the Grand Lodge of Quebec, Charles was secretary of the Allenby Lodge in Montreal for 22 years, later becoming a member of Bytown and Luxor Lodges after moving to Manotick, Ontario.

From his arrival in Canada, Charles was active in politics at the federal, provincial and municipal levels and was a prolific writer of "Letters to the Editor" which gave him great satisfaction and amusement. A keen collector of antique toy soldiers, he was also a member of the White Ensign Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Gallipoli Association and various family history societies.
