James Joseph "Jim" Soltis
March 3, 1943 – February 11, 2026
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of James Joseph Soltis on February 11, 2026. After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, Jim passed away at the age of 82, having been surrounded by the love of his family throughout his final days.
Born March 3, 1943, in Geraldton, Ontario, Jim’s journey eventually led him to a distinguished career in academia. After earning his PhD from the University of Michigan, he became a pillar of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Windsor. During his tenure, which included serving as Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department, Jim mentored thousands of students from undergraduate to PhD levels. He retired in 2002, leaving an indelible mark on the engineering community and the careers of countless professionals worldwide.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, Bernadette (nee O’Mahoney), as well as his sister Margaret Kulchycki and brother John Soltis.
He is survived by his son, Alan Soltis, and daughter-in-law Heather (nee Gordon). Jim was the incredibly proud "Deedo" to his three grandsons: Benjamin, Bradley, and Thomas. In his retirement, Jim found great joy in being a constant and supportive presence in their lives. He was a frequent face in the stands at their games, cheering them on with quiet pride and unwavering support.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the medical team and staff at Windsor Regional Hospital for the outstanding care and compassion provided to Jim throughout his illness.
In accordance with Jim's wishes, rather than a formal funeral service, a casual Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Cramdon’s Tap and Eatery (2950 Dougall Ave, Windsor, ON) from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Drinks and appetizers are on Jim.
