Kevin Albert Neville
Obituary Overview
Kevin Albert Neville
It is with profound shock and heavy hearts we mourn the sudden passing of our dear father, Kevin Albert Neville (AKA “Newf”), who left this world unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 8th, at the age of 73.
Kevin was born in Corner Brook, NL on Feb 3, 1953, and passed away in Ottawa, ON Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Left to honor and cherish his memory are: son John (Wendy), daughter Tara, granddaughter Jaydyn and grandsons Kade, Keegan and Colton; eldest brother of Linda Gilbert, Paul (Allison), Sharon, Beverly Callahan (Bill) and John (Kelly), “bonus brother” Gerard (Janet); sister-in-law Gayle Newson, brother-in-law Bruce Seaward; dearest family friends: Jos and Dave Kennedy, Sandy Hughes, Jeannie and Phil Pitts along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends near and far.
Kevin was predeceased by the love of his life and beautiful wife of 51 years, Karen; parents John and Mazie Neville; parents-in-law Glen and June Newson; sister Helen Seaward; brothers-in-law Norman Gilbert and Wayne Newson and longtime friend John Hughes.
Kevin had many roles throughout his life - son, nephew, brother, cousin, friend, athlete, mentor, coach, husband, father, grandfather, hardworking family man but to us he was home, Daddy, Poppy, provider, protector, biggest fan and supporter of his grandchildren's sports, the greatest storyteller and the keeper of all jokes. He was the anchor in any storm guiding us with strength and love. You never had to ask for help, he just knew. He always reminded us to never forget where we came from, to never give up and to always help others whenever you have the chance. His larger than life personality, laugh, smile and humor were definitely one of a kind.
His devotion to sports was a true passion and though he thrived at many sports; hockey became his favorite endeavor.
Despite ankle injuries at a young age, Kevin's love of hockey was never deterred, even though he was told he would never play again. After his recovery he began playing as a goalie during his school years in Corner Brook, NL. At sixteen he left home to join the Halifax Atlantics before moving to the Toronto Marlboros Junior "A" club, winning the Memorial Cup, O.H.A and Eastern Championship in 1972–73. He later played for the Port Huron Wings, Winston-Salem Polar Twins, Greensboro Generals, and was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, serving a brief stint as a back-up goalie. During his career he earned the nickname "The Fighting Newfoundlander". Returning to Newfoundland to pursue a career in insurance, he continued to play NAHA hockey with the Corner Brook Royals.
At Kevin’s request, there will be no formal funeral service at this time. A small service and interment will be held to honor Kevin and Karen in PEI at a later date.
In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial contribution to The Canadian Cancer Society or any local sports organization in your community supporting young athletes.
“When tomorrow starts without me
Please try and understand
That an angel came and called my name
And took me by the hand
The angel said my place was ready
In heaven far above
And that I’d have to leave behind
All those I dearly love”
(David Romano)
"You left smiling knowing your great love story would continue on in Heaven. Rest easy Daddy, as you hold Mommy’s hand once more”
