Mark Schilling
Obituary Overview
Mark Schilling
Mark R. Schilling was born November 27, 1945 to parents Paul Francis Schilling, Sr. and Marjorie Ann Schilling nee Mc Carty. He graduated Detroit Benedictine High School in 1963. He had an extensive education after High School. He attended eastern New Mexico university on a baseball scholarship where he pitched for their team until 1966 then attending the University of Michigan from 67-70. He achieved his BA in Mass Communication/Radio/TV/Film from Wayne State University in 1973 and his Bachelor of Education from the University of Windsor in 1986.
His early aspirations to direct films transformed into a lifelong passion for photography. He was the unofficial family photographer for his entire life, as well as an avid traveler and photo chronicler of those travels. He visited Cuba, France, Amsterdam and Ireland. He was known in Windsor as an established and gifted wedding photographer through his studio Mark R. Schilling Photography.
His family remembers him as the ‘fun uncle’ as well as the helpful middle brother who was a teacher even though he never chose to work as one. If someone needed help doing or learning something, he was always there. He loved music…especially the Beach Boys and Moody Blues. He would often take his sister and her friends or his niece and nephews to concerts such as the Beatles, Joe Cocker and The Moody Blues…just to name a few. These were sometimes their first concerts which became a joy that each and every one of his family thank him for and continue experiencing to this day.
He was a lifelong Cinephile sometimes seeing two or three movies a week. You could count on him to know all about the films playing in theaters. Mark’s excitement for films was uncontainable. He would recount the pros and cons of a film, as well as all the pertinent plot points…including the important and secret denouements of many movies. It took entire rooms of his family members yelling, “Uncle Mark! Stop!” before he would realize he was about to give up the ghost on a film. With a mischievous smile he sometimes stopped…and sometimes he would barrel on…because it was just ‘that good!’ His yearly Oscar parties, started in the 1970s, were get togethers where the whole family would vote on the categories. There was usually a small prize for the winners, but it was the joy of sharing the excitement that made the parties so beloved.
He is and will continue to be sorely missed.
Mark died peacefully January 2nd, 2026 at 6:50am. We would like to thank the staff at Tilbury Manor for their exceptional care of Mark over the last months of his life.
He was pre-deceased by his parents and brother Paul.
