It’s with heavy hearts that the family of Muriel Jane Merkley announces her passing on September 18, 2025 at the age of 85.
Predeceased by her husband, Hubert Merkley.
Cherished mother & step-mother of Brenda VanEssen (John), Cindy McDonnell (Mike), and Gregg Merkley (Debbie).
Proud Nan & Grandma of Amanda, Michael, Paula, Sarah, Christopher, Ryan, Justin, Kyle, Niki, Rebecca, Benjamin and Margaret, several great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
Muriel will be fondly remembered by her sister and brothers-in-law Verna Dillabough, Garry and Helen Swerdfeger, and Gary and Carol Barkley. She will be dearly missed by several nieces, nephews, and her dear friend Sally.
Predeceased by her parents Harry and Elma Hurlbert, sisters Mona (Bud) St John and Elaine (Bob) Flake, son Randy St John, and stepson Gary Merkley.
Muriel loved country music. She played the guitar and sang in bands for many years before entertaining fellow campers, family, and friends around a campfire every Saturday night at KOA in Cardinal where she was a seasonal camper for many years. She enjoyed playing bingo and the odd trip to the casino.
Muriel was a dedicated mom who loved her family deeply. She was a hard worker and started her first job when she was 12 years old. For many years, she worked at RCA Victor. She went back to school in her early thirties, worked at Domtar, North Grenville, and then onto the Ministry of Natural Resources where she worked as a budget analyst until her retirement.
She enjoyed serving her community as a member of the Edwardsburg Lions Club for many years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
Per Muriel’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
A Private Service will be held at a later date.
