Wilfred Payne
Obituary Overview
Wilfred Payne
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wilf Payne on February 9, 2026, after a valiant and private battle with cancer.
Devoted husband to Rita Payne, loving father to Kristen (Reed) and Tyler, and proud Poppy of Harper, Hudson, and Tate—the true joys of his life. A hardworking and dependable man, Wilf was always just a phone call away for those he loved. Known for his kindness, humour, and generous spirit, he touched the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Wilf especially cherished his time with his grandchildren, who adored his playful and loving spirit. Tate, his “little mini-me,” never wanted to say goodbye, always snuggling into Poppy’s shoulder. Harper and Hudson loved that Poppy never said no—whether playing mechanic, horsey, or hockey, going on bike rides, or heading to summer festivals—he joined in with joy and laughter, making each moment truly unforgettable.
Among his many treasured memories was attending a World Series game to cheer on the Toronto Blue Jays with his nephews—an experience that brought him great pride and excitement.
A former hockey player for the Windsor Spitfires, Wilf carried his love of the game throughout his life. He spent 25 years with the City of Windsor, where he was surrounded by a close and treasured circle of friends, never without a good story or a hearty laugh.
Reunited with his father, Wilfred Payne Sr.; his in-laws, Antonio and Edevige Amante; and his dear brother-in-law, Carmen Amante. Wilf leaves behind his cherished mother, Doreen Payne, sister Willimena David (Gary), brother Spencer Payne (Lisa), along with a large circle of special nieces and nephews whom he loved deeply.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to his niece, Nicole, whose unwavering strength and bright spirit were a true source of comfort. We also wish to thank Lou, Frank, Dave, and Fran for their steady friendship and support during this time.
Wilf leaves a legacy of love, generosity, and hard work that will be remembered by all who knew him.
A private family farewell has taken place, honouring Wilf’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Windsor in his memory.
