Obituary Overview

In Loving Memory

Yukyip (“Yippy”) Lem Novotny, born 1942, died peacefully on October 6, 2025. She is survived by her 3 adult children, Chris Johannesen (Kristen), Ben Johannesen (Cathy), and Jennifer, as well as her four grandchildren, Katherine Jade, Lucas, Angus, and Matthew. She is predeceased by her grandson, Owen, and close friend, Patricia Legault. She will also be missed by Michael, Alison, Justin, Jonah, and Carsten, who she considered family.

Yippy grew up with her 14 siblings in Brooklyn, NYC. She relocated to Ontario, Canada with her young family and eventually pursued a career in nursing. Her love of the profession drew her to teaching, first at the Kitchener-Waterloo School of Nursing then at Conestoga College, where she remained as an instructor until she retired in 2009. Throughout her teaching career she continued working as a registered nurse, primarily at Humber River Hospital. She also earned a masters degree in education (and many post-graduate certificates) while maintaining two full-time workloads. Her greatest joys were mentoring students and fostering her many friendships with teaching and nursing colleagues.

After retirement she travelled extensively, enjoying excursions and cruises around the world. She eventually moved to Toronto where she was an active participant in local seniors’ activities and community centers, despite experiencing challenges related to Parkinson’s disease. She most recently lived at Rayoak Place, a retirement home in North York, where she deeply appreciated the friendship and care of the staff and residents. She will be remembered for her generosity, compassion, intelligence, and wit.

At Yippy’s request, there will be no formal funeral gathering or service. However, well-wishers are invited to raise a toast to Yippy over dim sum, Chinese buffet, or another family-style feast! Her favourite way to cherish and celebrate friends and family was over a shared meal.

Yippy was a passionate educator who dedicated herself to supporting underprivileged or exceptionally promising nursing students.  In lieu of flowers, friends and family are invited to make a donation to Conestoga College in support of scholarships for students in the nursing program.  Donations can be made at: Click Here to Donate Please ensure you complete the “Gift Made in Memory” section.
